CANDIDATE'S STATEMENT

NAME: Jim Provenza                                                 AGE: 53

OCCUPATION: Special Assistant District Attorney/ Immediate Past President of the Board of Trustees of the Davis Joint Unified School District

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Local experience will play an important role when evaluating candidates for your next county supervisor. I am honored to have served for the past four years as a Davis school board member and most recently as President of the Davis Joint Unified School District.  My wife and I have been actively involved in the Davis community for over 15 years. Our children attended and graduated from the Davis schools. I am a lawyer with a degree from UC Davis School of Law.

As president of the board, I was instrumental in winning back 4.5 million dollars owed by the state for Montgomery School. I fought for improvements in special education and was responsible for priorities that deliver excellence in education for all students while improving the performance and test scores of students who struggle to succeed.

As your county supervisor, I will continue to be a strong advocate for you. My priorities will be to:

• Preserve open space and farmland.

• Promote open government, ethics and public access.

• Improve services for seniors, children, the disabled, and crime victims.

• Build a sound county budget by pursuing all available state and federal funds.

Being a county supervisor means getting things done – I have 28 years of county and state government experience. For the past 15 years, I have been a special assistant district attorney, representing county law enforcement before the California Legislature.  I also served as Counsel to the California Senate Judiciary Committee and director of a countywide senior citizens law program.

As a D.A., I was responsible for enacting legislation increasing the penalty for attempted murder of a peace officer, providing funds for domestic violence and sexual assault prosecutions, creating innovative programs to prevent child and elder abuse, funding a model truancy prevention program, and enacting tough penalties for air pollution violations.

My two decades of budget experience include:

•  Writing and implementing budgets for a countywide agency.

•  Modernizing the fiscal practices of the school district.

•  Obtaining hundreds of millions of dollars from the state for local law  

 enforcement and environmental protection programs.

I will put my budget experience to work for you.
