.

Dear Friends,

I have been the Fourth District Supervisor for almost 4 years.  I have been working hard to promote agriculture, protect the environment and improve Yolo County's economy.  I will soon be filing to run for re-election and will need your help to succeed.

Experience

As the President of the Board of Trustees of the Davis Joint Unified School District, I was responsible for establishing new Board priorities which emphasize excellence in education for all students while addressing the achievement gap affecting minority, low income and Spanish speaking students. I also fought for improvements in the special education program and modernized the budget and fiscal practices of the district.  In addition, as President of the Board, I was instrumental in winning back 4.5 million dollars in funds for the school district.

I have had a long career in public interest law.  For the past fourteen years, I have been an attorney with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, representing the District Attorney before  the California Legislature.  I am responsible for the enactment of legislation on hate crime, domestic violence, sexual assault, child and elder abuse prevention, witness protection, and environmental enforcement. My efforts also resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for local law enforcement, crime victims, and environmental protection programs. My former legislative jobs have included work for the California State Assembly Public Safety and the Senate Judiciary Committees.  In these positions, I worked on critical legislation addressing such issues as civil rights, water pollution, disability rights, and consumer protection.  Before working in California politics, I directed Legal Services of Northern California in Sacramento and the Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara.

My Family

I have been married to Donna Provenza for 25 years. Donna is a sociology professor at California State University in Sacramento. Donna's mother, Rose Calabria, resides with us at our home in Mace Ranch. We have two children. Jennifer, age 25, is a 2001 graduate of Davis High School. She graduated from New York University in 2005 and she is currently attending graduate school at Brooklyn College. James, age 20, graduated in 2006 from Davis High School. He is majoring in Graphic Design at the California College of Arts in Oakland.

Why I Want to be Your Supervisor

I am running for county supervisor in order to preserve and protect open space and farm land; to promote and enhance services for seniors, children, and the disabled, and to insure that Yolo County is able to provide essential law enforcement services and public safety protection.

Priorities

Preserve open space and farm land. Agricultural land and open space are among our most valuable assets. We must protect our environment and preserve our quality of life by resisting the urban sprawl that has impacted surrounding counties.

Promote open government. The people’s business should be conducted in public. Closed meetings should be avoided and citizen participation welcome.

Improve services for seniors, children , the disabled, and crime victims. As our population ages, it is essential that we assure that the elderly and the disabled be provided the assistance they need to thrive in our community. We must also provide resources for children who are victims of neglect or abuse and assure that the needs of crime victims are addressed.

Build a solid county budget by pursuing all available state and federal funds. Our county does not receive it’s fair share of state and federal funds. We must band together with other small counties to seek a greater portion of state and federal funds.

The Election

Election day is June 3, 2008, and there's a lot of work to do.  I am still looking for volunteers to help and donations to help pay for it all.  I'm also in the process of printing yard signs for my supporters to display throughout the Davis community.  Please contact me or click the hyperlinks if your are interested in helping.

I also plan on scheduling several open houses and coffees throughout the community, creating opportunities for Davis residents to meet me and share their concerns for the County.  As these are scheduled, please check back for my calendar of events to be updated.

Finally, I always welcome input.  Please contact me with any questions or concerns.  I would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Jim Provenza
